Partnership Formed Between Private and Public Sectors: Five California Students Address Why Education Matters and Receive $1,000

LOS ANGELES, April 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Five public high school seniors are $1,000 closer to achieving their educational goals thanks to the third annual Why Education Matters essay contest.

Open to public high school seniors throughout California, Why Education Matters requires entrants to express in 700 words or less their definition of success, and articulate how education helps combine personal passions with professional aspirations.

This year's winners are Laura Marson from the South Kern Unified School District, Felix Magana from the Ventura Unified School District, Taya Zoormandan from the William S. Hart Union High School District, and Ross Valeikas and Catherine Mitchell, both from the Vista Unified School District. They will be receiving their scholarships at upcoming school board meetings or at senior awards nights.

Why Education Matters is a collaboration between the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators (CALSA), HispanicBusiness Magazine and the public education law firm of Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost. Essays are assessed by leaders at CALSA and the editorial staff at HispanicBusiness Magazine; Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost bestows the $1,000 to each winner. Additionally, the winning essays are featured in the September online issues of HispanicBusiness Magazine, at HispanicBusiness.com.
