NEW YORK, Jan. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:
Passive Components for Power Electronics
http://www.reportlinker.com/p01084113/Passive-Components-for-Power-Electronics.html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Electronic_Component_and_Semiconductor
HIGH AND MEDIUM POWER PASSIVE COMPONENTS MARKET IS GROWING FROM A 3.7B$ TO A 6.6B$
This report focuses on the part of passives for high medium power applications (rail traction, motor drives, renewable energies…). It explains how these markets are structured, what are the technologies used, and what evolutions we can expect.
CAPACITORS AND LAMINATED BUSBARS, THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR THE POWER STACKS
There are passives that are obvious, and passives that we never see. The first category includes capacitors and laminated busbars. Laminated busbars is a key device as it supports all other components and the core of integration. Laminated busbar solutions, made of copper or aluminum, are perfect for renewables, and high power stacks. They compete with homemade solutions (simple assembly of conductors with no lamination process). The technology is well established, and it may evolve by becoming integrated with other components, cooling or capacitors. For lower power, it has not much future, and there is a technology race to define the solutions for EV/HEV (Power PCB, light and solderable busbars….). For capacitors, technology evolutions are on the way.
In this report we detail, for each type of component (capacitor, laminated busbar, connectors, resistor, and inductors):
• Component technologies and innovations
• Applications oriented technology description
• Players market share and competition analysis
• Market forecast to 2017 for motor drive, UPS, EV/HEV, rail, wind and PV
AN EXPECTED 10.4% CAGR FOR COMBINED PASSIVE DEVICES SALES
Due to the growth of PV, Wind, EV/HEV, Motor drives and UPS, the power device market is in a booming phase to support the power stack market growth.
More and more power electronics applications are demanding pre-assembly standard blocks, which can be combined to meet custom requirements. As presented in this report, laminated busbar is then the basis for these blocks, and the market and supply-chain is already being re-shaped. Mersen has acquired Eldre, Methode is partnering with SBE, and Rogers is entering power module packaging activity. All these evolutions are re-shaping a market that is quite small (250M$) compared to capacitors (+600M$) or resistors, but still booming.
Capacitors are evolving in the same way. Specific capacitors for renewable energies are available and so, following this trend, the market is exploding. Growth is supported by these new markets, as shown in our forecasts. The connectors market is also following the same trends.
For resistors, inductors and transformers, it is slightly different. We have not observed a noticeable breakthrough. These markets, even if they are more and more structured, are local markets, with family-owned companies (or companies with this spirit), doing business as usual. A few innovative companies can take a big part of the new applications with new product innovations and technology developments such as EBG resistors or Arcol.
INTEGRATION TRENDS ARE PUSHING TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENTS
An inverter is an assembly of power modules and passive components together. This creates a strong link between components, and a trend toward more integration. This trend not only impacts the growth of the laminated busbar or capacitor market; it also affects product developments. Companies are now working on joint developments. The blocks, designed to fit each other, can provide the expected improvements in compactness, standardization and modularity, efficiency, etc….
This report analyzes these trends, technical aspects and the supply chain evolution. Our forecast and analysis projects how these factors will evolve in the future, and what to anticipate.
