Patients of Dr. Ajay Nehra File Suit Against Rush University Medical Center
CHICAGO, March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cronin & Company Ltd. announces that patients of the world-renowned Urologist Dr. Ajay Nehra are suing Rush University Medical Center (Circuit Court of Cook County Docket # 2015 CH 4938) over obstructing them from being treated by their chosen physician. These long-term dedicated patients have been with Dr. Nehra since he practiced at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and followed him to Rush University Medical Center, where he was appointed Chair of its Urology Department in March 2013.
In September 2014, Rush improperly removed Dr. Nehra as Department Chair, but reaffirmed that his faculty privileges would continue uninterrupted. In response, Dr. Nehra filed suit (Northern District Illinois, Docket # 14-cv-7445) against Rush seeking damages for breach of contract and defamation.
In retaliation, Rush sent Dr. Nehra a January 28, 2015 letter stating that it would not renew his faculty privileges when they expired, but also precipitously placing him on "paid leave." Rush admitted that their decision not to renew Dr. Nehra's privileges was in reprisal for his contract lawsuit:
[Y]our response to being removed as Chairperson, including the filing of a lawsuit against Rush, makes it clear that your continued employment would only prolong and aggravate an intolerable situation in the Department and impair our efforts to turn this situation around. (Letter, paragraph 6.)
"We like Dr. Nehra and we'd like to keep him as our doctor," says Nicholas Kouzoukas. "Rush's petty political agenda has nothing to do with patient care. Rush's spiteful action effectively prevents Dr. Nehra from seeing patients after March 27, 2015. It forces all of Dr. Nehra's patients to scramble to find a new doctor when we have long trusted Dr. Nehra." Thomas Cronin, counsel for the patients, added "Rush should have worked out a more thoughtful solution that did not disadvantage patients."
Dr. Ajay Nehra is formerly Chairperson of Department of Urology at Rush University Medical. Prior to his tenure at Rush, Dr. Nehra was a Professor of Urology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant in the Department of Urology of the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, and had a fellowship in male sexual dysfunction and infertility, both at Boston University School of Medicine.
