Pennsylvania Corrections Department Reminds Public to Register for AlertPA Service to Continue Receiving Emergency Notifications
New System Offers Timely Information Available when Emergencies Occur
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Department of Corrections acting Secretary Shirley Moore Smeal today reminded the public that they can receive timely information when an urgent situation or emergency occurs by registering with the AlertPA notification system.
AlertPA provides subscribers with information on emergencies via a method of their choosing, such as by telephone, cell phone, text message or e-mail.
Citizens can register to be notified about a specific state prison in their immediate area, Moore Smeal said.
"This system is different from the one we currently use," Moore Smeal said. "That system automatically calls listed phone numbers within a one- to two-mile radius of a state prison. However, the AlertPA service requires individuals to register before being notified."
Moore Smeal said it is important for her to get the word out to citizens that if they want to receive future notifications of prison incidents, they will need to register with AlertPA. She said the Department of Corrections plans to only use the AlertPA system in the future and stressed the importance of registration on the part of all citizens.
"We want to ensure a smooth transition between the old system and the new system," Moore Smeal said. "So, the public needs to realize that action on their part is required or future notification may end."
The information offered through AlertPA can help users make informed decisions during emergency situations. Individuals can register for AlertPA by visiting www.pa.gov and clicking on "Alerts & Advisories."
Anyone without Internet access should contact their nearest state correctional institution's critical incident manager and provide their name and phone number so the information can be entered for them.
"We want to ensure that everyone who wants to be notified of a prison emergency will be notified in a timely manner," Moore Smeal said. "Failure to register means they won't be notified."
