PETEX Announces Land Management Summer Courses in Austin and Houston

Oil and gas workers can learn valuable job skills over the summer with condensed certificate program and short advanced courses

AUSTIN, Texas, June 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Petroleum Extension Service (PETEX®) at The University of Texas at Austin is proud to announce a full slate of summer courses in land management scheduled for Austin and Houston.

Current oil and gas industry workers involved in land-related activities or those interested in exploring opportunities as professional "landmen" may enroll in the Professional Land Management Certificate Program beginning June 18 in Austin and June 27 in Houston. This summer's certificate program courses will be condensed so that students can finish up the program in a fraction of the time it normally takes to complete. The courses are approved by the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL), a primary organization supporting this field of interest.

PETEX also introduces two new advanced one-day courses for more experienced landmen. "Advanced Land Management: Advanced Contracts and Special Issues" is scheduled for July 30 in Austin and again for August 29 in Houston. This course explores the creation and administration of complex land and drilling contracts. "Advanced Land Management: Pooling and Unitization in Texas" is scheduled for July 31 in Austin and August 30 in Houston. Participants in this course will study variations of "pooling" and "unitization" in Texas, whereby specific land areas are "pooled" together to create "units" of land for drilling transactions.

A "landman" negotiates with landowners for mineral rights to their land on behalf of an oil or gas company. A landman ensures that a proper lease is secured between the landowner and the driller so minerals can be extracted legally from the land. PETEX land management training also extends to other oil and gas industry professionals such as attorneys, accountants and current land professionals to help them learn and understand the latest "best practices" in this area.

With the recent rise in drilling projects in Texas, oil and gas companies are seeking more land professionals. The PETEX Land Management Certificate Program intends to create more qualified candidates to fill these jobs to keep drilling projects on schedule with fully trained, skilled landmen to oversee them.
