SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Sept. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The NCPDP Foundation is pleased to announce the successful completion of a study conducted by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Pharmacy. This groundbreaking research, funded by the NCPDP Foundation General Grant Fund, explored the implementation and feasibility of patient health information interoperability through the Pharmacist eCare Plan (PeCP).
The study implemented the PeCP to connect a community pharmacy and a medical office with a preexisting relationship. The intervention targeted patients undergoing transitions of care and utilized HL7® FHIR technology to enable efficient, ongoing data sharing after initial IT integration. The findings revealed that prescribers and pharmacists shared a mutual interest in interoperable patient data, recognizing its value in clinical collaboration.
"We are thrilled with the results of this study, which highlight the critical role of pharmacists in healthcare data interoperability" said J.W. Hill, MBAHCM, Executive Director of the NCPDP Foundation. The findings underscore the importance of seamless data exchange in improving patient care and coordination. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of the Pharmacist eCare Plan in various healthcare settings." The study suggests further research utilizing the PeCP for additional use cases and wider pharmacy/clinic collaborations.
