Philadelphia Federation of Teachers files Complaint in Equity
PHILADELPHIA, June 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers today filed a Complaint in Equity, and a Motion for Temporary Restraining Order with the Court of Common Pleas seeking to enjoin the Philadelphia School District from laying off teachers without regard to the seniority rights guaranteed to them by the collective bargaining agreement between the Union and the District.
Jerry Jordan, PFT President said, "We have a contract that was negotiated in good faith less than 18 months ago. That contract provides that layoffs be implemented in order of seniority. The School District and the School Reform Commission either do not understand or refuse to abide by their obligations under this agreement, and we will not tolerate this conduct."
In the papers filed today, the PFT is asking the Court to prohibit any layoffs from taking place that are not done in strict seniority order.
