Philanthropist Wesley Hamilton Honored with WeWork Prize Money
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 31, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Wesley Hamilton, founder of Disabled But Not Really, was honored with a Community Giver award and an $18,000 prize during WeWork's Creator Awards event. Hamilton is an adaptive athlete with a heart for empowering those with disabilities to overcome their challenges, both mentally and physically. After traveling to New York City, Hamilton made his way to Madison Square Garden on January 17. Hamilton was pleasantly surprised when he was announced as one of four winners for the Community Giver award among 200,000 WeWork members.
In 2012, Hamilton suffered from a spinal cord injury, which paralyzed him. He battled and overcame depression after finding his purpose: to motivate people with disabilities to know that they are not alone and that they can achieve anything. During his acceptance speech, Hamilton acknowledged WeWork's influence on his journey, "WeWork gave me a community of like-minded individuals and it helped me fulfill my mission and to create something awesome, the Disabled But Not Really Foundation."
Hamilton does not let his wheelchair keep him from accomplishing big things. Hamilton's optimistic demeanor both surprises and inspires those around him. Leadership of the WeWork Corrigan Station branch in Kansas City nominated Hamilton for the work of his foundation, Disabled But Not Really, as well as his community engagement project, Hydrate the Homeless. His new prize money will be put toward equipment for the organization's first adaptive fitness program.
