Physician Vitality Institute Helps Doctors Prevent and Overcome Burnout
Anesthesiologist-turned-life-coach Dianne Ansari-Winn, MD, MPH offers workshops, education and guidance for doctors, enabling them to improve healthcare for patients.
RIVER FOREST, Ill., Nov. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Dianne Ansari-Winn, MD, MPH has founded the Physician Vitality Institute (PVI). The mission of the Physician Vitality Institute is to "help doctors heal the world," by helping doctors to stay healthy in mind, body and spirit. The Physician Vitality Institute provides peer coaching, peer workshops, and education to doctors in all specialties of medicine.
"The research is very clear that physicians in the United States are becoming burned out at an alarming rate. Fifty percent of U.S. medical students, resident and doctors are suffering from signs of burnout. Studies also show that physician burnout affects patient safety, quality of care, and health care costs, and affects physicians personally. Doctors who are suffering from burnout are at higher risk for suicide, for example," says Dr. Ansari-Winn. "I founded the Physician Vitality Institute because the cost of not helping doctors with burnout is too high. Doctors do things that seem superhuman, but we are not superhuman. No one goes into medical school thinking that they are going to quit in 5 or 10 years."
Known as "Dr. Dianne" to her clients, Dr. Ansari-Winn is an Anesthesiologist and certified life coach. She also hosts a podcast called The Doctor's Life on timely issues around physician health, wellness, and career development.
Dr. Ansari-Winn understands first-hand what burnout feels like. "It was one of the worst times in my life," she admits. "I went from feeling amazing and helping people everyday to leaving medicine altogether, which was the hardest decision that I have ever made."
While Dr. Ansari-Winn has been very successful with her doctor clients in helping them to rejuvenate their careers using her 5-step Physician Vitality Recovery System, she points out that physician burnout is not due to a failing of the doctor as a person. "Since burnout is a workplace issue, it is going to take changes in the workplace together with individual efforts to help our docs," she says. "Together, we can make a change for the better."
