PlayStation Store And Sony Entertainment Network's Video Unlimited Service "Throwdown" Discounted Movie Rentals This Fall

SAN MATEO, Calif., Oct. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- With the summer blockbuster movie season coming to a close, Sony Network Entertainment International is making certain that no one misses out on the action. Today, the company kicked off this year's "Theatrical Throwdown" and "Movie Marathon" promotions¹ through Sony Entertainment Network. Starting October 7, through November 17, the promotions offer a full slate of this year's biggest blockbuster films and popular catalog titles to rent for 99¢ through the Video Unlimited service and PlayStation® Store.

The promotions are timed perfectly to help launch the service's new HLS adaptive bitrate streaming technology that improves the viewing experience on PlayStation®3.  The technology offers better streaming video quality by measuring the user's connection speed and serving up the best possible picture quickly, without unwanted skips or pauses during playback.

The picture quality boost will be noticeable when users settle in to watch the newly crowned winner of the Theatrical Throwdown.  The promotion pits two new digital movies head-to-head on a weekly basis giving customers the power to vote for which release they want to see discounted to a 99¢ rental the following weekend. Voting kicks off today with two horror flicks going head-to-head – The Last Exorcism Part II, starring Ashley Bell, versus Evil Dead, starring Jane Levy.  Customers can view the contenders and vote via the Theatrical Throwdown app on the PlayStation Facebook page (https://apps.facebook.com/theatricalthrowdown).

In addition, the Movie Marathon catalog promotion offers a weekly collection of popular genre-based catalog films available to rent for 99¢. The campaign will showcase a different genre of films each week. Customers can check out the weekly listing of Movie Marathon rental titles by visiting the Sony Entertainment Network online store at https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com or through the PlayStation Store on PlayStation®3.
