PODS Houston unites local businesses to help welcome home local hero
TOMBALL, Texas, June 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Severely injured Houston veteran Lance Corporal Daniel Peterson received the keys to his new, specially adapted home built by Homes for Our Troops, along with donated gifts presented by PODS Houston during a special key ceremony Saturday, June 23 in Tomball, Texas.
Having a disabled father who fought in the military, Phil Dvorak, managing partner for PODS Houston, saw the need to help others who have served overseas for our country. Dvorak first heard about Lance Corporal Peterson at the Liberty Festival in January and volunteered in the homebuilding efforts in March. Inspired by what he saw as a volunteer, Dvorak spearheaded a community donation drive in support of Homes for Our Troops with PODS Houston, Ace Hardware and Sunny 99.1 Radio. Many gift cards to local restaurants and retail shops were collected to help welcome Peterson home. Kay Weatherly, Customer Service Manager for PODS Houston was honored to be a part of the donation drive and present a check for $800 to Homes for Our Troops along with the community gifts for Lance Corporal Peterson.
"We were so honored to be included at the key ceremony for Lance Corporal Peterson," said Phil Dvorak, managing partner of PODS Houston. "Lance Corporal Peterson is a dedicated individual who has supported and fought for our country."
The key ceremony for Peterson, a U.S. Marine who lost both legs during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2010, was welcomed by supporters who filled the street as an escort took the respected war hero to his front doorsteps. During the ceremony, distinguished speakers, which included 130th District State Rep. Alan Fletcher, Congressman Kevin Brady, Sgt. Major and Homes for Our Troops president Kenneth Preston, addressed the audience.
Lance Corporal Peterson was speechless and touched throughout the ceremony. "This house will be like if I had legs. To have my independence back is the best gift someone could give me," he said. "Thank you to everyone!"
