Pool Drain Covers Prompt Safety Recall, Public Pool Closures Nationwide: The Law Offices of Michael Pines Alerting the Public of This Important Safety Recall
SAN DIEGO, June 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Last week, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled approximately 1 million pool and spa drain covers due to irregularly strong suction and related personal injury risks from the defects. In wake of the dangerous news, Michael Pines, San Diego's Safety Ambassador, has aimed to educate the public on the recall.
CNN reports that injury risk due to pool drain cover entrapment is especially high for young children, and that the CPSC advised officials overseeing kiddie pools, wading pools and in-ground spas to respond immediately to the recall and subsequent closure advisory issued by CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum.
Tenenbaum explained that, despite the inconvenient Memorial Day weekend timing, public pools should close until the hazardous drain covers can be replaced in order to prevent needless tragedy and maintain public safety standards. CPSC Public Affairs Director Scott Wolfson added that the recall was rooted in an incorrect certification process that failed to uphold proper protocol during testing, and that the drains were improperly rated regarding water flow capacity management through the cover.
The CPSC has the authority to enforce pool closures if necessary in order to maintain safety standards during the recall and replacement process.
Stay safe, stay informed: spreading awareness of government recalls
Product recalls are more common than many consumers would imagine, and can affect everything from household goods to hardware to children's toys and motor vehicles. As consumers, it is our responsibility to stay informed about government recalls and safety hazards – for both our own security and that of our communities alike.
If you frequent a local pool or spa facility, talk to administrators about the CPSC pool drain cover recall and ensure that steps are being taken prevent risk and injury to bathers. Alert others in your community to the recall, and stay current with other recall announcements by frequently visiting the federal government's official product safety website, http://www.recalls.gov
As summer approaches and temperatures rise, pool officials will no doubt encounter resistance as they enforce the CPSC closure advisory. But remember – safety should always be the number one priority.
