POOR PEOPLE'S ARMY Plans #LivesOverLuxury March on the DNC
PHILADELPHIA, March 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- On March 20 at 11am, the Poor People's Army will hold a press conference via Zoom at this link http://bit.ly/PoorArmyConference to discuss plans for the #LivesOverLuxury March on the Democratic National Convention. The Poor People's Army was initiated by Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC), which has organized the largest marches outside the presidential conventions since 2000.
This year the #LivesOverLuxury March will bring together the largest poor people's army this country has ever seen: at 4 pm on July 13, 2020, the opening day of the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee, WI. On July 12, the Poor People's Army will host a training on coordinated housing takeovers.
"Sixty-seven cents of every government dollar is spent on war; meanwhile, there's no healthcare or housing," says Cheri Honkala, founder of PPEHRC and Poor People's Army. "The money for destruction increases each year, no matter who occupies the White House. The poor are coming to Wisconsin to get their 'cheese,' to take that war money and restore our lives."
Recent events make plain the violence of our economic system that leverages poverty to generate wealth for the elite. Untold numbers of people die on a regular basis from the callous disregard for the poor by those in power. Deprived of healthcare, paid sick leave, affordable childcare, elder care, shelter, and food, many feel isolated and abandoned. Drugs and guns are more available in our communities than fresh food or decent-paying jobs.
This is no accident—it's by design. Our leaders use public crises to further privatize schools and industries, automate jobs away, and tie any benefits to electronic monitoring, to reshape society in ways that maximize profit while ignoring people's needs.
Appearing in fatigues at the press conference, generals in the Poor People's Army will address the war on the poor: homelessness, economic uncertainty, war, community gun violence, environmental destruction, immigration criminalization, incarceration of innocent people, and the country's public health crisis. They will then lay out their vision of the "politics of love" and explain how people can get involved to put people's lives over luxury.
