Port Jefferson Village Launches Augmented Reality App
PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y., June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Through groundbreaking technology Port Jefferson is on the forefront of launching a new app that will allow users to take a unique, historical look into areas around the Village of Port Jefferson narrated by local historian, Ken Brady. The augmented reality app is the result of collaborative efforts with the Port Jefferson Conservancy, President of YourPastPortal.com, John Rago, the Village of Port Jefferson, Cablevision's Optimum WiFi and Brady. Imagine if you could be transported back in time and experience a familiar place as it was 30, 50, or 100 years ago…the buildings…the people…the history. The app will feature 7 points of interest centered in Mayor Jeanne Garant Harborfront Park and will bring historical content to life. Over time, digital "walking tours" will be added and updated giving fresh new looks at different historical and chronological points. The free mobile application available to most major devices will be the gateway into the past of Port Jefferson going back up to 100 years. You can simply install the application by going to www.portjeffportal.com and begin discovering the rich maritime history of Port Jefferson.

There is also a "buy image" offer with several merchandise options. Or visitors can go to the Port Jeff website (www.portjeff.com) where there are over 3,400 digitized images; many of which are available for purchase. Most importantly, purchases made on this site directly benefit the great work of the Port Jefferson Conservancy.
Port Jefferson Conservancy President, Lisa Perry, states, "We are thrilled to bring this exciting new program to Port Jefferson. We will be the first village in the nation to be able to boast this type of program which combines augmented reality, e-commerce and historical awareness."
"Optimum WiFi provides free and unlimited wireless internet access for Optimum Online customers at nearly 150 locations in downtown Port Jefferson, and more than 80,000 in the Tri-State Area, so customers can access the Port Jeff Portal by using our fast, reliable and advanced Optimum WiFi network," said Timothy Farrell, vice president of broadband product management, Cablevision. "We are pleased to bring cutting-edge technology to Port Jefferson to enable this innovative new app for residents, tourists, and anyone interested in the unique history of the Village."
