SYDNEY, July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Australian natural foods company, Freedom Foods Group, has partnered with Kroger supermarkets nationwide to launch a new range of products using a unique, non-GMO Australian barley grain that promotes better gut nutrition. The Barley+ Toasted Muesli and Snack Bar range is the only product available in the U.S. featuring the superior Australian wholegrain, BARLEYmax™, which has been studied for over three decades by the country's leading research organisation, CSIRO.
Less than a third of U.S. adults eat the recommended 3-ounce servings of grain foods a day. Barley+ makes it easy to achieve the recommended amount, as just one serving of Barley+ Toasted Muesli delivers almost 2-ounce equivalents of wholegrains, nearly two-thirds of the recommended daily intake. In addition, an independent consumer research study commissioned by Freedom Foods Group noted statistically significant reductions in body weight, body fat and body mass index (BMI), and decreased feelings of anger when test subjects committed to a 28-day Barley+ Nutrition and Lifestyle Reboot Program; a by-product of good nutrition and lifestyle. Next, Freedom Foods proposes to support a rigorous University-based randomized controlled trial to further validate these results.
Tom Dusseldorp, Chief Marketing Officer for Freedom Foods says, "At Freedom, we have a mission of 'Making Food Better' and part of this mission is finding new ingredients that can feed our gut bacteria the right stuff. We are very proud of Barley+ and with the inclusion of BARLEYmax™ we have created a proposition that will have true function – this is something people actually need and will have great benefits to their health."
Australian Super Grain Benefits
The secret behind the superior barley wholegrain is its unique mix and increased quantities of fiber compared to other wholegrains. It delivers significantly more of the three types of important fiber together in one grain. This consists of insoluble fiber, sometimes referred to as 'roughage', as well as resistant starch which acts a little like fiber, and soluble fiber that U.S. diets fall seriously short in. The latter two demonstrate prebiotic activity; i.e. they offer premium 'food' for the good bacteria already living in the gut.
Arguably, prebiotics are just as important, if not more important than probiotics, as they encourage the growth of the good bugs existing in the gut. As they grow stronger, they can overtake the bad bugs, creating a healthier, stronger gut environment. Probiotics on the other hand may not survive the journey to the colon, and if they do, may not be able to compete against those bugs already there.
Dr Joanna McMillan, Nutrition Advisor for Freedom Foods Group says, "The evidence from nutrition science research highlights that eating more wholegrains reduces our risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and even helps us to control our weight. Refined grains do not deliver these benefits and may even increase our risk. One of the main reasons for this is that wholegrains are one of our key food sources of several types of fiber, but especially prebiotics."
Barley+ 28-Day Reboot Nutrition and Lifestyle Program
The company believed so strongly in the extraordinary health potentiating benefits of Barley+, that they developed The Barley+ 28-Day Reboot Nutrition and Lifestyle Program. To demonstrate the positive impact Barley+ could have on wellbeing and gut health, 50 employees were recruited to complete the program which was independently validated by a group of health professionals.
Conducted over a 28-day period in early 2017, participants substituted their normal daily breakfast with Barley+ Muesli and a Barley+ Muesli Bar each day as a snack. After 28 days, there were statistically significant reductions in group mean body weight, body fat and body mass index (BMI), and a significant positive shift in feelings of anger.
Kroger Supermarkets will become the first in the world to launch the Barley+ range, which will be on shelves from mid-July in this major retailer, with distribution expected to roll out to additional U.S. and Australian stores from August. The toasted muesli collection is comprised of three delicious flavors: Cranberry and Nuts, Pink Lady and Macadamia Muesli, and Maple and Nut. The line will retail at $6.49.
