NEW YORK, May 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Powertrain and Electric Vehicle Market: Future Implications : Global Decline in Diesel Cars Due to Taxation and Low Emission Zones in Major Markets
This study highlights passenger-car fuel trends in Europe, China, Japan, North America, India, South America, and South Korea and discusses changes in engine count and engine displacement in the automotive industry. The study also provides an overview and implementation roadmap of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) and World Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedures (WLTP) cycle. Strategic powertrain technologies necessary for carbon-dioxide reduction in Europe are also highlighted, and the impact of exhaust after-treatment solutions on diesel cars has also been discussed. The study concludes with a European voice-of-consumer study, which analyses consumer preferences towards gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric engines.
Electric Vehicle Segmentation
EVs use electric motors instead of an internal combustion engine (ICE) to propel a vehicle. Electric power is derived from either a lead acid, nickel metal hydride (NiMH), or lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)
BEVs do not have an ICE to drive the car; the propulsion is purely electric. The battery supplies the electric motor with the energy required to move the car. This energy is transferred to the wheel by a stepreduction gear.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)
PHEVs have an ICE, motor , and a battery connected in parallel to the ICE. A PHEV runs on battery energy during the first few miles and switches to hybrid mode once the battery is depleted.
Mild Hybrid Vehicles
The conventional starter motor and alternator are replaced by a powerful electric motor, which is mounted on the crankshaft between the engine and the transmission. It performs power assist, and a cold start and start/stop as well.
Full Hybrid Vehicles
The full hybrid system employs two electric motors and a Power Split Device (PSD) that splits power into mechanical and electric paths to achieve full hybrid capability.
