MELBOURNE, Fla., Oct. 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Preeclampsia Foundation launched two new educational resources to help expectant moms and their providers better understand the growing field of predictive and diagnostic tools. The "Ask About Preeclampsia Tests" explainer video and handout are available in both English and Spanish and are designed to help patients understand why their providers may recommend certain tests during pregnancy.
Preeclampsia and related hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) affect about 5-8% of all pregnancies, but its cause is still not fully understood. The only "treatment" for the condition is to deliver the baby and the placenta, but the condition can also occur or worsen up to six weeks postpartum. It continues to present a challenge for clinicians to better identify who is at risk and use their experience to make clinical decisions to manage HDP when it occurs.
"Monitoring for preeclampsia includes blood pressure checks, weight measurement, and urine analysis during regular prenatal visits – and, sometimes, blood work to measure kidney, liver, and placenta function," said Preeclampsia Foundation Chief Executive Officer Eleni Tsigas. "Our community has shared a need for clearer understanding of why certain tests are done during pregnancy. We're excited to introduce two new tools for patients and providers to use together to help bridge that gap."
In recent years, several manufacturers have developed more sophisticated and precise molecular tests, with more in the research and development pipeline. Some aid in predicting who will develop early onset preeclampsia, while others aid in diagnosis of severe preeclampsia, a variant that often has disastrous outcomes for mother and/or baby. All add to what is still a scant toolkit for a disorder of pregnancy that still manages to challenge obstetric healthcare providers.
The Foundation's Medical Advisory Board, leading experts on predictive and diagnostic testing, Patient Advisory Council and other patient advisors contributed to the co-designing of the materials to ensure evidence-based, patient-centric content.
