The Future of Connected Homes
Richard Soloway
Chairman and CEO
NAPCO Security Group
The advent of technologies to facilitate the "connected home" are already changing our lives, and promise to bring more convenience and sophistication in the future. The "connected home" which was a catalyst in Google's $3.2 billion acquisition of Nest Labs, Inc., enables consumers to do things like adjust their home's temperature, turn on-off lights, arm and disarm alarms and lock doors, open your garage to accept deliveries and see the delivery take place, all from a smartphone anywhere you are. Says Soloway: "The trend is clear, and consumer adoption is increasing. We are still in the early stages of this paradigm shift, but consumers increasingly recognize the benefits of monitoring and controlling their home systems, from almost anywhere via their smart devices. This industry trend is further demonstrated by Google's recent $3.2 billion acquisition of Nest Labs, Inc. Some of the largest companies in the world are participating in the connected home movement."
Soloway has been in this industry for more than 35 years, and can speak about the future of connected homes, what consumers can do today to save time and money, and what they will be able to do in the years to come as this technology evolves.

A Novel Approach to Pass-Through Entities
Eric J. Barr, CPA/ABV/CFF, CVA, CFE
Co-Managing Member
Fischer Barr & Wissinger LLC
"Pass-through entities are one of the valuation community's oldest, least resolved and -- it might be said -- most poorly defined set of challenges. Despite academic studies, exhaustive professional thought and judicial opinion, there is still a lack of consensus in this critical area of valuing pass-through entities. Approximately 80 percent of all businesses that file U.S. income tax returns are pass-through entities, such as S corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies. Such business entities pay no income taxes at the entity level, rather, their earnings 'pass-through' to owners who incur the income tax on business profits."
Barr is available to provide a new perspective with respect to tax affecting pass-through entities when valuing business ownership interest in connection with divorce, estate tax compliance, gifting of ownership interest, owner disputes, and other situations where valuations are required. He has more than 40 years of public accounting experience and is a national thought leader and frequent speaker in connection with the valuation of closely held, family-owned businesses. He has conducted seminars on the valuation of pass-through entities to state societies throughout the country. He has written articles for The Value Examiner and BV Update and has testified as an expert in the areas of business valuation, commercial litigation, forensic accounting and lost profits analysis. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, the NJSCPA Litigation Services and Accounting and Auditing Interest Groups, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and is a member of the editorial board of The Value Examiner

Pros and Cons of Health Care Reform

She has preformed lost profits analyses and has testified as an expert witness in business valuation and shareholder disputes. She has expertise in valuing medical and dental practices and is the author of several articles published in national publications.
