Where Fleeing Venezuelans Go; Immigration to U.S.
Dr. German Cadenas
Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology
Lehigh University
Three million Venezuelans have fled economic and political crisis in their country, most since 2015. Driven by violence, hyperinflation and food and medicine shortages, the exodus has accelerated in the last six months. In a chapter, "The Growing Venezuelan Diaspora in the United States," in the new book "Latinx Immigrants: Transcending Acculturation and Xenophobia," Cadenas explains what characterizes immigrants from Venezuela, where they go, what challenges they face in their new countries, the contributions they make, and how they may be served educationally and in mental health care. For example, the U.S. is the top destination for Venezuelan immigrants, with U.S. asylum applications filed by Venezuelans up by 168% in 2016 and 28,000 Venezuelans applying for asylum in the U.S. in 2017. (Spain is the second most common destination). Most settle in the southeastern U.S., with 42% in Florida and 13% in Texas.
An estimated 90% of adults who emigrated have university degrees, 50% have children, and 20% have ties to nationals in the host country. "Family-based migration and employment sponsorships tend to be significant immigration pathways for Venezuelans to the U.S.," Cadenas says. Venezuelan immigrants are likely to be of working age and to be employed in management, business, science, and arts occupations. Many are adapting to the reality of permanently settling in the U.S., Cadenas says, and see themselves as being in exile from their home country. Travel from Venezuela to the U.S. was restricted by the current U.S. administration's travel ban, which may impact future immigration. "How the U.S. will continue to respond to the dire needs of Venezuelan immigrants remains to be seen, and it could impact the lives of thousands," Cadenas says.

Michelle Obama's In Vitro Fertilization Journey – Why Can't Our Society Embrace the IVF Process?
Jennifer Prudenti
Author
In Michelle Obama's new memoir, "Becoming," Obama opens up about her struggles to conceive, her devastating miscarriage and how she turned to IVF to help her create her family. Prudenti, author of One Mother's Journey: Creating My Family Through In Vitro, says: "While I applaud Michelle Obama, I have to ask, why is it our society cannot embrace the IVF process? Why was this detail omitted from conversation until now? In the waiting room of these clinics, women are all sitting around with their heads down, not talking, reading, not wanting to be approached. Nobody wants to discuss it. I'm not sure why. People are embarrassed, and maybe even a little ashamed. I think it starts with well-meaning parents who probably say, 'You can't conceive? What's wrong?' and suddenly the woman now feels less. Of course, the parents don't mean to do that, but that's how it comes out."
