"The IRS has released Notice 2013-71, which permits cafeteria plans to be amended, allowing employees to 'carry over' up to $500 of unused assets into future years. The old 'use it or lose it' rule was a huge sticking point for employees who could have benefited from using their FSA. The thought of potentially losing money often outweighs the thought of saving money. It's the fear factor that pushes people way when the risk of loss exists. Now this fear has, at least partially, been taken away. But how do employers entice employees to contribute more with this new rule? After all, it is a nice benefit to employees and employers can save big on payroll taxes."
Freeman is a public speaker, author, and Certified Financial Planner professional. After watching how personal financial decisions affected his family as a child, Freeman became obsessed with understanding the powers of money and finance. Today, he spends his time training and educating people on how to make better financial decisions and understand complex areas of financial planning. He is available to discuss what employers can do to entice their employees to contribute more to their Flexible Spending Accounts.

"Small-business owners bear the bottom line cost of federal, state and local taxes both in their daily operations and in planning for growth, succession planning or exit strategies. Strategic transactions also give rise to a host of business issues that can shift risk and reduce the perceived benefit of the deal. Timely advice is critical to maximizing returns and avoiding costly surprises."
Reuther, an experienced attorney with a particular expertise in representing closely held business in tax and legal matters, is available to discuss potential pitfalls and planning opportunities for business owners interested in reducing their tax cost or maximizing their returns on major business changes.

Most won't discover just how expensive the changes are until April 15. There are some definitive moves professional athletes can make to reduce their overall tax burdens: consult experienced tax pros, revisit state of residence decisions, and fully engage the advisory team. Karaffa, a tax accountant for professional athletes, is available to discuss the effect of the new tax rates on professional athletes, and what they can do.

Reynolds is available to discuss state and local tax issues, primarily focusing on California: 1) California Enterprise Zone (CA EZ) credits have expired, and while the window is closing quickly to claim CA EZ hiring and sales-and-use tax credits, companies can still secure 2013 credits in 2014. 2) A new set of business incentives are replacing the CA EZ credits: new hiring credit is available beginning this year for qualified businesses located in former EZs; new sales and use tax exemption will be available July 1, 2014, for tangible personal property used in manufacturing or R&D; and the new California Competes Credit. 3) Final regulations for the California Competes Credit (an income tax credit for businesses) are expected to be final within the next couple months and the program is scheduled to launch in May; this replaces the CA Enterprise Zones and is anticipated to keep businesses in California and draw more businesses to the state. 4) Business entity structuring in California: A 2013 increase in individual income tax rates -- at both the federal and state level -- have changed the landscape, especially if a company is a pass-through entity, such as an S corporation, LLC, or partnership based in California. Does the company's existing entity structure still make sense? 5) CA Filing Enforcement: The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) will be posting another notice on their website in December, prior to mailing thousands of letters requesting California tax returns from individuals or business entities that may not actually owe taxes; how can recipients of these letters respond? Reynolds has dealt with California income and franchise tax dispute resolution and tax planning since 1991.

Lawrence Ploucha
Shareholder
Fowler White Boggs, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
"An ounce of planning can be better than several pounds of tax liability."
Ploucha received his LL.M in taxation from the University of Miami. He is knowledgeable in the areas of estate planning and tax law -- two areas of the law that often cross. He can discuss retirement planning, 401(k), pensions, IRAs, gift-tax rules and charitable contributions as they relate to tax planning and liability. For example, a person can make an IRA contribution up to filing time that relates back to the previous year. That's a planning technique that will reduce your previous year's taxes by action taken in the following year.

Bradford L. Hall, CPA
Managing Director
Hall & Company CPAs
"The key to having a properly done tax return is to spend time and effort on it. Most people don't want to put in the time and effort, and that leaves them at high risk for an audit. They should know that to the degree they spend time with their CPA, the more accurate the tax return will be, and they will be able to sleep better at night knowing it's been done properly."
Bradford has nearly four decades of experience in public accounting and is actively involved in all aspects of taxation, auditing and business planning. His core strengths as an Irvine CPA are in the areas of: strategic tax planning for high-net-worth individuals, including corporate owners and executives, closely held corporations, partnerships, LLCs and trusts; negotiating corporate mergers/sales and acquisitions; and representing clients in matters dealing with the IRS and audit situations.

Greg Rosica
Tax Partner; Contributing Author, "EY Tax Guide 2014"
Ernst & Young LLP
"Sweeping new tax laws took effect for 2013 and beyond. The American Taxpayer Relief Act and the Affordable Care Act bring widespread tax changes that significantly impact taxpayers, so it's essential to educate yourself on how these laws can affect your tax and financial situation. In addition, the Supreme Court ruling in 2013 that overturned key provisions of the federal Defense of Marriage Act and subsequent IRS ruling ushered in substantial tax changes for same-sex married couples. With the tax landscape continuing to change every year, the 'EY Tax Guide' is an excellent reference tool to help readers navigate through a complex and frequently changing tax scene and prepare accordingly."
Rosica is a contributing author to the "EY Tax Guide 2014" and a tax partner in EY's Personal Tax Services, leading the Southeast Area Private Client Services practice. With over 17 years of experience, he provides clients with holistic wealth planning, which integrates family wealth planning, tax and personal financial planning. He is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Registered Investment Advisor Representative (having passed the NASD Series 2 and 65 exams). He has also received the Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) designation from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Lynne Wright
Financial Advisor
Raymond James
Wright specializes in LGBT retirement planning. She is based out of Ann Arbor, Mich., which does not recognize same-sex marriage, making it difficult for her gay clients. This predicament has forced Wright to come up with creative solutions to help protect and benefit those clients. For instance, Wright works with a lesbian couple and one of the partners has a pension plan through her union, but the other partner has no income; should she die before retirement, she would receive nothing. With no safety net to speak of, Wright came up with an alternative setup she calls a "pension replacement plan," which is essentially a life insurance policy. Given this is the first year same-sex couples are able to file joint tax returns since the repeal of DOMA, this story can speak to many who find themselves in a similar situation. Wright can also speak to tax issues for same-sex couples in states where it is recognized.
Wright draws on more than 28 years of financial industry experience when she helps clients develop customized, wealth-building portfolios. A graduate of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti with a bachelor's degree, Wright joined Raymond James in 2001 after career-building experience with E.F. Hutton and Prudential Securities in Ann Arbor. In addition to her considerable financial advisor experience, she calls on her skills as a Wealth Management Specialist, Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor and Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor. A native of Dearborn, Wright enjoys bird watching and hiking during her travels throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and South America.
