PSPCF Hosted Child Survivors of 2011 Japanese Tsunami and Earthquake
BELLEVUE, Wash., Aug. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- PSP Children's Foundation (PSPCF) sponsored the second Summer Experience in Seattle from July 25 - August 6. The program was created in response to the 2011 Japanese Tsunami to give children from the Tohoku region of Japan, one of the hardest hit areas, a chance to build positive experiences in the wake of tragedy. The Summer Experience program brought eight junior high students and two teachers to Seattle to participate in lessons and activities around the region.
The students spent a week attending English lessons at Bellevue Children's Academy. They also toured the Seattle area and spent time with their host families during the rest of their stay. The group visited the University of Washington, toured downtown Seattle, attended a Mariners game and toured Safeco Field, and hiked Mt. Rainier. On their last day, they visited Microsoft, where they played new games and explored the facilities, followed by a Google tour and lunch at the Google cafeteria.
PSPCF received support and cooperation from several businesses for this year's Summer Experience in Seattle, including:
- Delta Airlines Japan
- Bellevue Children's Academy
- The Seattle Mariners
- Microsoft
- Global Education Network
- Azumano International
- Uwajimaya
- Puget Sound Coachlines
- Maruta
- Miyabi Sushi
- I Love Sushi on Lake Bellevue
- Pacific Software Publishing, Inc.
"We are very happy to see the children gain memorable and positive experiences we hope they will carry with them into the future," says Mayumi Nakamura, President of the PSPCF Board of Directors. "The goal of the Summer Experience is to both provide them with hope for the future and some time to forget – the children who participate in the program have lost parents, homes and friends and the Miyagi prefecture is still recovering. PSPCF hopes to continue helping children by continuing to host this program in the future."
