Public Relations Expert David Margulies Examines Crisis Management and Prevention in the Internet Age
DALLAS, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota, Southwest Airlines, BP, Johnson & Johnson, Tylenol, Anna Nicole Smith, Oprah Winfrey, United Airlines, and Tiger Woods are all featured in a timely new book titled "Save Your Company, Save Your Job: Crisis Management in the Internet Age" by media relations and crisis management expert David Margulies.
"The Internet and social media have dramatically changed how corporations, governments and nonprofits must deal with crisis situations," says Margulies. "There are numerous outlets for communicating displeasure, spreading bad news, providing the public and media with confidential information, or simply spreading lies about people and organizations. The book gives advice on how organizations can handle these types of situations."
The book focuses on recent events such as the infamous Twitter Tirade by director Kevin Smith directed at Southwest Airlines. Through Twitter, Smith's story about being asked to leave a flight because he was too big to fit in one seat was picked up by national news outlets. The book explores why Texas cattlemen should have avoided tangling with Oprah Winfrey, and provides unique insight into BP CEO Tony Hayward's media gaffes.
"There are lessons to be learned from all these incidents," says Margulies. "Every organization can benefit from the analysis of how these issues were managed or mismanaged."
The book praises many organizations for doing a good job in difficult situations including The University of Texas, Southwest Airlines, Oprah Winfrey and the National Transportation Safety Board, and points out simple steps that companies can take to avoid or effectively deal with a crisis.
"The goal is to provide information that will help C-level executives, government officials and elected officials prevent crisis situations when possible and deal with them effectively when necessary," says Margulies.
