Disaster Relief Charity Encourages Holiday Shoppers To Give Help And Hope To Families In Need

ShelterBox is an international humanitarian relief charity that delivers emergency shelter and supplies to people who lose their homes after a disaster such as a flood, hurricane, volcano, tsunami, cyclone or earthquake. ShelterBox also provides assistance in war-torn countries and other areas faced with conflict. Following a massive volcano eruption in Indonesia, a ShelterBox response team arrived to distribute ShelterBoxes and help set up tents for survivors. Response team member, Alan Monroe, observed families moving into the tents with their few remaining possessions. "I noticed the prayer mats were laid out, kitchen sets were already in use, and children were playing with their toys," said Monroe. "I had one gentleman step out and grab me by the arm and exclaim "merkasi merkasi," which is Indonesian for 'thank you.' It hit me that we don't just deliver supplies. This isn't just a box of stuff. It had become their new home instantly."
Since its founding in 2000, ShelterBox has responded to over 240 disasters in more than 90 countries and provided emergency aid for well over one million people. During the Haiti earthquake in 2010, ShelterBox mobilized quickly to bring nearly 30,000 ShelterBoxes to survivors, aiding one-third of a million people.
