Quarterly 'Device Confidence Index' Jumps to 113.2: A Gadget-Filled Xmas Seems to Boost Trust in Mobile Security...Except When It's Important

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mocana, a company that focuses on device security and mobile security, today announced the release of the latest set of scientific polling data forming a new index of consumer sentiment.  The quarterly Device Confidence Index measures how consumers feel about the electronic devices in their lives. The survey, which was run as a baseline last summer, is designed to act as a leading economic indicator of activity in the "Internet of Things" ecosystem, including the devices, software and services that make up this emerging market, currently valued at over one trillion dollars.

The composite Mocana Device Confidence Index for the last quarter of 2011 jumped to a level 13.2% over the baseline survey that was conducted 6 months ago, indicating a significantly higher level of confidence in electronic devices among consumers.  However, when consumers were asked specifically about secret or sensitive information, they remain strongly distrusting of devices' ability to protect that information well. In fact, only 20% of consumers surveyed said they trusted devices to protect their sensitive information.

The survey asks consumers their feelings on four basic issues: their overall level of trust in a device, how well electronic devices work for them, how they feel about trusting these devices with especially sensitive information, and how anxious they are about hackers and viruses on devices. Consumers are then asked to project how they think they will feel about the same questions, six months from now.

Polling Methodology

The Device Confidence Index is administered for Mocana by IBOPE Zogby International, one of the top 20 market research firms in the world, with offices in 15 countries. The poll is based on a nationally-representative sample of 2,100 U.S. adults. IBOPE Zogby conducted the latest survey for Mocana from January 5 through January 9, 2012.  A sampling of IBOPE/Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, participated. To more accurately reflect the U.S. population, slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender, and education. The margin of error is +/- 2.1 percentage points. Margins of error were higher in sub-groups. The MOE calculation is for sampling error only.
