Questions Raised on Results of the Florida 23rd Congressional District Democratic Primary
Media Advisory for Monday, October 24
WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A team of independent researchers recently conducted a statistical and demographic analysis of the August 30th Democratic primary results in Florida's 23rd Congressional District between incumbent Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and challenger, Tim Canova. They found an unexpected statistical pattern that does not seem to be explained by error or the demographic data that is available from the Supervisors of Elections offices. One expert, Dr. Fritz Scheuren, a member of the statistics faculty at George Washington University, concluded that the results were "potentially implausible," and went on to say, "What you show are results that could have been manipulated to get to this graph." To verify the vote, Dr. Scheuren and the authors of the study recommend a manual count of the ballots, at least initially in a sample of key precincts. This press conference will feature:
- Ms. Lulu Fries'dat, lead author of the study; an Edward R. Murrow award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker whose work focuses on systemic problems with U.S. elections that discourage participation. Fries'dat received a Sunscreen Best Documentary award for her first feature-length documentary (producer/director) Holler Back — [not] Voting in an American Town, a film that explores why more people don't vote and participate in politics.
- Tim Canova, the Nova Southeastern University law professor who raised more than $3.8 million in small donations for this race, a record for congressional campaigns. He chairs Progress For All, a grassroots political and community action group based in Hollywood, Florida.
- Dr. Virginia Martin, Democratic Election Commissioner in Columbia County, New York, who has conducted full hand-counts of paper ballots since optical scanners were first introduced in their county in 2010. She and her Republican counterpart developed an efficient, prompt, cost-effective, and fully secure bipartisan process that welcomes public oversight.
