Razor Bumps, Ingrown Hairs, and Folliculitis: Breaking the Shaving Cycle

GREAT NECK, N.Y., Sept. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Most people treat razor bumps as a cosmetic annoyance, something a serum or a better razor should fix. But for many, especially people with coarse or tightly curled hair, the bumps keep coming back because the actual cause never gets addressed. Laser by Aleya, a laser hair removal and electrolysis studio, is publishing guidance on why razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and recurrent folliculitis keep returning, and what actually interrupts the cycle.

For most people, an ingrown hair is an inconvenience that clears up on its own. For those with coarse or tightly curled hair, the same cycle can leave lasting dark marks and, over years, permanent changes to skin texture. The condition becomes more visible in summer, when more skin is uncovered, but it isn't a summer problem. It runs year-round, and a laser course takes multiple sessions across several weeks, which means the timing argument matters as much as the medical one.

What Razor Bumps Actually Are, and How They Differ From Razor Burn

Razor burn is surface-level irritation from the blade itself, and it typically calms down within a few days on its own. Razor bumps are a different problem. They form when a shaved hair curls back and pierces the skin instead of growing straight out, and the body responds the way it would to any foreign object, with inflammation.

That's why razor bumps don't resolve the way razor burn does. The hair is still under the skin, still triggering the reaction, until it's cut again and the cycle restarts. Some people use "shaving rash" as a catch-all for both, which is part of why the two get confused.

Razor Bumps, Ingrown Hairs, and Folliculitis: Where the Lines Blur

Folliculitis technically just means inflammation of a hair follicle, and that inflammation has two very different possible causes. One is mechanical, an ingrown hair irritating the follicle from the inside, which is what's happening with ordinary razor bumps.

The other is infectious, bacteria or fungus getting into the follicle and causing a genuine infection. Both get called "folliculitis," and that overlap is exactly what leads people to treat an infection with a moisturizer, or ignore a mechanical problem while waiting for antibiotics to fix it.

Pseudofolliculitis Barbae: When Razor Bumps Become a Medical Problem

When the ingrown-hair cycle becomes chronic, especially in beard and neck hair, it has a name: pseudofolliculitis barbae, or PFB. It's disproportionately common in people of African and, to a lesser extent, Asian descent, largely because coarse, tightly curled hair re-enters the skin more easily after it's cut. Per DermNet, PFB looks similar to true folliculitis barbae but has a different cause.

Folliculitis barbae is a bacterial infection, while PFB is a mechanical and inflammatory reaction to the hair itself. That distinction matters because the treatment for one can be useless, or actively wrong, for the other. Long-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers are the standard technology for treating PFB in darker skin tones, with clinical evidence in very dark skin going back decades, including an early study published in the Journal of the National Medical Association.

If you notice spreading redness, pus-filled bumps that keep multiplying, fever, or sores that aren't healing, see a board-certified dermatologist. That's an infection, and no hair removal method treats an active infection.

Folliculitis Treatment: What Helps, and What Makes It Worse

For true bacterial or fungal folliculitis, treatment means seeing a doctor, not adjusting a shaving routine. For the mechanical form, the instinct to pick at bumps or shave directly over them is close to universal, and it's also one of the most reliable ways to make things worse.

Picking reopens inflamed skin and raises infection risk. Shaving over active bumps cuts hairs that are already curling inward, which just creates more of them. For a deeper walkthrough of what actually helps a chronic case, read the full guide on treating folliculitis and ingrown hairs long-term.

How to Get Rid of Razor Bumps You Already Have

Short term, the goal is calming inflammation, not fighting the hair:

  • Apply a warm compress to soften skin and help a curled hair work its way out on its own.
  • Exfoliate gently, and only once the area isn't actively inflamed, to clear dead skin that can trap hairs.
  • Let the area go unshaved for a few days to remove the trigger long enough for existing bumps to calm down.
  • Avoid picking or scrubbing irritated skin, since that adds injury on top of inflammation.

None of this stops the next cycle. Once a current flare settles, the only intervention that removes the actual cause is removing the hair. For areas like the bikini line, bikini laser hair removal targets the follicle directly, so there's no hair left to curl back into the skin in the first place.

How to Prevent Razor Bumps if You Keep Shaving

If you're going to keep shaving, technique matters. Shave in the direction hair grows, not against it, especially with coarse or curly hair. Use a single, sharp blade rather than a multi-blade cartridge, since multi-blade razors cut hair below the skin's surface, which raises the odds it curls back in.

Don't stretch the skin taut while shaving, and moisturize afterward. Per the American Academy of Dermatology, these kinds of technique adjustments are the standard first-line advice for reducing razor bumps. But it's worth being honest about the ceiling here. None of it changes the mechanism. The hair still gets cut, it can still curl back, and for coarse or tightly curled hair, some percentage of it will.

Bikini Razor Bumps and Underarm Irritation: The Highest-Friction Areas

The bikini line and underarms see this cycle at its worst. Clothing rubs against already-inflamed skin, movement and sweat add friction, and both areas get shaved more frequently than almost anywhere else on the body.

That combination is also why post-inflammatory dark marks show up so often in these spots specifically, since the skin barely gets to recover between shaves before it's irritated again. For clients dealing with recurring bumps and darkening under the arms, underarm laser hair removal removes the source of the friction rather than just managing the irritation it causes.

Ending Razor Bumps for Good: Why Removing the Hair Removes the Problem

No amount of shaving technique fully solves a problem that shaving itself causes. If hair keeps growing back and getting cut, some of it will keep curling into the skin, on a schedule that has nothing to do with how careful someone is. Removing the hair is the only intervention that removes the cause rather than managing the symptom.

Per a 2019 review of PFB treatment options, laser hair removal using long-pulsed Nd:YAG technology is the most consistently effective approach for coarse, curly facial hair, since that wavelength is suited to treating darker skin tones safely. More recent data backs this up: in a 2026 study of 50 patients, most of whom identified as Black, 88% reported satisfaction with treatment, 70% saw at least a 75% reduction in lesions, and 96% were able to resume shaving without recurrence.

"By the time someone books a consultation with us, they've usually already tried every serum and technique change out there," said Aleya Bamdad, founder of Laser by Aleya. "What changes once we start treatment isn't subtle, the dark marks start fading because the skin finally gets a break from the cycle that was causing them."

For clients managing this year-round, not just when summer uncovers it, Laser by Aleya offers consultations to map out a treatment timeline. A deeper look at laser hair removal for ingrown hairs covers how the mechanical cause gets addressed in more depth.

Since a full course runs multiple sessions across several weeks, starting well before results are wanted matters as much as anything else here. Laser hair removal is the one step in this cycle that actually breaks it.
