Read Well Reading Program Helps Lee County (FL) Kindergarten Students Excel on 2009 and 2010 SAT-10 State Assessment
DALLAS, May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Lee County kindergarten students realized remarkable reading scores on the 2009 and 2010 SAT-10 state assessment test after using the Read Well reading program. Offered by Cambium Learning Group-Voyager, Read Well, a K-2 primary reading curriculum provides instruction in the five essential components of reading.
Lee County began implementing the program district-wide with kindergarten students during the 2008-2009 school year. As a result, kindergarten students demonstrated the following scores:
- Nineteen percent of kindergarten students scored at the 99th percentile. Only 1 percent of a normal population would be expected to score at that level.
- Sixty-three percent of kindergarten students scored at or above the 75th percentile. Only 25 percent of a normal population would be expected to score at or above that level.
- Only 8 percent of students scored below the 25th percentile. About 25 percent of a normal population would be expected to score at that level.
"The instruction Lee County teachers provide through the Read Well kindergarten program has afforded our kindergarten children the opportunity to beat the bell curve!" says Dr. Tihen, interim superintendant at Lee County Schools. "It is very gratifying to find 19 percent of our kindergarten students scoring at the 99th percentile on SAT-10, while only 8 percent are scoring below the 25th percentile. We will continue to move forward and make great strides in beating the bell curve through the use of this reading program!"
Lee County has much to celebrate," says Marilyn Sprick, senior author of Read Well. "Through the dedication of its teachers, support staff and the use of Read Well, Lee County educators have afforded children from all walks of life the opportunities that come only when kids learn to read."
In addition to Read Well, the district also uses the following Cambium Learning reading and math intervention programs: Language!, TransMath, Rewards, Six Minute Solution and Vocabulary through Morphemes.
