Reading Kingdom Founder, Dr. Marion Blank, Honored with the Upton Sinclair Award!
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 15, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Each year, EducationNews.org, the Internet's Leading Source of education news, honors a number of individuals who have made a significant contribution to education while displaying great courage in the process. The award is named in honor of Pulitzer Prize winning author, Upton Sinclair, who worked tirelessly to promote social justice. The winners are found after a lengthy search for the heroes of American and International education.
This year, Dr. Marion Blank, the inventor of the online reading program, the Reading Kingdom (www.readingkingdom.com) has been honored with this award.
Dr. Blank is the director of the Light on Literacy program at Columbia University in New York and the author of "The Reading Remedy." She has devoted her life to helping children learn to read and is recognized by her peers as one of the world's top experts in literacy. Dr. Blank has used her innovative methods to help thousands of kids and now she is making her method available to every child via the Reading Kingdom online program.
The Reading Kingdom uses groundbreaking teaching methods invented by Dr. Blank that overcome the unbelievable 40% rate of failure caused by problems inherent in standard phonics education. To ensure that every child has access to these programs, the Reading Kingdom offers scholarships to those children who cannot afford to pay the subscription fee. Scholarship recipients include organizations such as the School on Wheels which tutors homeless children.
In issuing the award, Education News stated: "Marion Blank represents our unsung heroes who are working diligently to ensure every child learns to read. Reading is most critical to a great education. If you can read, you can learn almost anything!"
Other winners of the Upton Sinclair award include numerous important figures in education such as Geoffrey Canada, E.D. Hirsch, Diane Ravitch and Jonathan Kozol.
