Recovery Mountain Triumphs Despite Long, 18-Month Battle

"Working on this project has been both frustrating and rewarding. We endured an unnecessary, 18-month battle for town approval. There were 5 months spent at the town planning board level for a simple change of use. The use is allowed within the zone, yet we were subjected to multiple contentious public hearings, studies being required that had never been required in the past of an existing business, and 2 zoning board hearings. While we were successful in attaining town approval, we then faced an abutter appeal which wound up at the Superior Court. Ultimately, The Superior Court ruled in our favor on all 10 counts argued by the abutter. In the end, this unnecessary saga cost us precious time and money that could have been used helping people, who need and deserve a program like ours," says Ms. Bownes, Executive Director. Bownes goes on to say that misunderstanding of this project, ineptness by the Planning Board and stigma were major factors in the unnecessary delay.
Recovery Mountain's foundation is the 12-step approach to recovery offering a unique program and campus which involve guests daily in health, fitness, nutrition, life coaching and recreational activities both on and offsite. The program features 9 beds (male only) in private and semi-private rooms, nutrition and health education, communally prepared meals tailored to individual dietary needs, a state of the art facility in which fitness and team building activities are undertaken on the indoor turf field and obstacle course, bright airy group meeting spaces utilized for life coaching, yoga and massage.
