Red Shirt Entertainment Presents Daisy at the Norwood Club
Take a look back at the courageous life of one of the most important figures in the civil rights movement of America through this landmark play
NEW YORK, Feb. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Red Shirt Entertainment announces the first official reading of Daisy by award-winning playwright and director Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj. The historical play, which features music, will highlight the life of Daisy Bates, organizer of the Little Rock Nine. The reading will be held at the prestigious Norwood Club, located at 241 West 14th Street, on Monday, February 13th, 2012.
The work is inspired by the unquestionable legacy left by the indomitable Daisy Lee Bates. Mrs. Bates was a great American civil rights leader who came from very humble beginnings to become one of the most pivotal Negro figures in the struggle for equality among black and white in the United States. As president of the Arkansas State Chapter of the NAACP she, along with the Little Rock Nine, brought integration to Little Rock Central High School in 1957 and opened a door that would not only bring great change to our country, but inspire the world.
"Right now in our country there is a lot of discussion and debate about public education," says Maharaj. "It is important for us as Americans to know the history and what was sacrificed so public education could exist."
Maharaj has been developing the play for three years now.
"We are very excited to bring a story like Daisy Bates' to the stage," adds Executive Producer Frank O'Brien. "This is an important event for us in supporting our mission of producing and creating artful work that also has social impact through an entertaining vehicle like theater."
Daisy is anchoring Red Shirt's month long effort to pay homage to Black History Month during February.
