Red Shirt Entertainment to Host Rooftop Theater Event in Manhattan
Entertainment company launching first annual play festival on Midtown rooftop from August 3-5
NEW YORK, July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Red Shirt Entertainment - the innovative entertainment company based out of New York - is pleased to announce the dates for its upcoming play festival entitled "The Red Shirt Rooftop Reading Series." The series will be held from August 3rd through 5th on the rooftop of Red Shirt's office, located on West 23rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. The organization will be working closely with ad agency Conversation. Last year, Red Shirt and the agency collaborated with over 100 artists together.
The festival will be made up of nine performances total. The world premiere of "Spook," a one-act play inspired by Dr. Maya Angelou's poem "Willie," will be shown all three days of the weekend. The other eight performances will be 10-minute plays put together by emerging playwrights.
"This is an example of what Red Shirt is bringing to the community," said Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj, Producing Artistic Director at Red Shirt. "We are committed to giving a voice to artists who have been bypassed historically and we're excited to give them a platform."
Four performances will be held on Friday night, August 3rd, from 7 to 9pm, with four more on Saturday night, August 4th. A climactic marathon of all eight will be held on Sunday afternoon, August 5th, from 2 to 5pm. Each playwright will enjoy the opportunity to collaborate with a director and a team of actors.
"When we first set out to create Red Shirt, we wanted to make sure we had something different to offer people," said Frank O'Brien, Founder and Executive Producer of Red Shirt. "The festival is the perfect way to kick off what will be a new experience for the audience."
Other Red Shirt projects lined up for this season include a reading of "Two Lost Worlds," a compelling love story set in ancient times, "Straight Outta Denmark," a new, urban reimagining of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" set within the hip-hop music industry, and "Daisy," a play based on the life of civil rights icon Daisy Lee Bates. Opportunity for sponsorship of these works still remains open. Please visit www.redshirtentertainment.com if interested.
