Reggae in the Park Returns to Denver

DENVER, July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The sounds of Reggae – music that's good for the soul...and for Denver's Cancer Care Initiative. Area residents can enjoy these same smooth sounds during this year's Reggae in the Park concert to be held on Saturday, July 27th, from 5-10 p.m. at Centennial Center Park Amphitheater.  The concert benefits the Cancer Care Initiative, a partnership between Progressive Health Center and Swedish Medical Center physicians.

Back by popular demand is Grammy award-winning Reggae band, The Original Wailers. The band's lead vocalist, Al Anderson, worked extensively with iconic Reggae artist Bob Marley, who died of cancer at the young age of 36. Marley was an early and passionate advocate for integrative cancer treatment. His approach is now the core of Progressive Health Center's services for patients being treated for cancer and its spokesperson, former Denver Nuggets head coach and two-time cancer survivor George Karl.

"This concert will be a happy reminder of the soothing sounds of Reggae music, but the reality is that cancer treatment isn't so smooth," Karl says. "Patients need access to a whole suite of integrative treatments along the way – something Progressive Health Center prides itself in delivering."

The Cancer Care Initiative is designed to help patients in need, seeking to improve quality of life through complementary and alternative medicine that integrates well with conventional medical treatments. According to Progressive Health Center Spokesperson Sue Goodin, experienced practitioners specialize and lead the way in therapies like nutrition, stress management, acupuncture, massage therapy and more – all designed to heal and strengthen the mind, body, spirit and emotions of each individual.

"We've come a long way in the treatment of cancer and we've learned that the body needs more than pharmaceuticals, radiation and surgery to fight this battle," Goodin says. "It needs nourishment for both the mind and body. Integrative cancer treatment is the future of cancer therapy."

For one night, however, the emphasis will be on good music. Concert-goers will enjoy an evening of rhythmic harmonies, as they sail away to Jamaica and the Caribbean where Reggae music originated.  Anderson returns to the Reggae in the Park event each year in support of his fellow musician and good friend's cancer journey.

"Bob would be proud of this event and all that it represents," Anderson says. "He believed in the total mind, body and spirit approach to cancer treatment long before the medical community embraced it."
