SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- BoxUnion, a contemporary heavy bag studio offering a multi-sensory fitness boxing experience, is set to open this April at 1755 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California. The 45-minute group class boasts a thoughtful high-intensity workout that scorches calories while improving technique.
Over a two-year period, owners Felicia Alexander and Todd Wadler, developed the BoxUnion method with a specialized advisory board that brings together expertise from boxing and movement to safety, motivational cues and more. The pair intentionally constructed a total-body workout and environment that appeals to consumers at any level of experience in fitness and boxing.
"We are taking one of the most intimidating sports {boxing} and creating something that is accessible to as many people as possible," says co-owner Felicia Alexander. "Nothing makes me happier than when I see a 25 year old former college boxer next to a sixty year old woman trying the class for the first time, and both are getting an insane, super fun workout."
The studio features 40 individual custom foam-water bags designed to prevent stress on the joints as well as an imported rubber floor which allows for high impact absorption and energy return. The signature class begins and ends with a "mindful moment" to set intentions and keep boxers focused. Throughout the arc of the class, coaches introduce shadow boxing, heavy bag drills, fat-burning cardio, core work and plyometrics within a motivational group environment. The lights dim and the theatrical experience begins, uniting boxing and movement with the beat of energetic music.
"The music is key to everything we do. It is the glue that binds each minute of class and keeps boxers present and literally smiling through the sweat," says co-owner Todd Wadler. The BoxUnion studio was designed by Glen Bell of DEX Studio, most known for his work with SUGARFISH, with a deliberate effort to marry functionality with high-end design. The outcome is a beautiful and engaging space as unique as the surrounding Santa Monica community. The lobby features lofted wood ceilings inspired by the pier and large bright windows, with a color palette that draws from the beach at sunset.
In an effort to further establish accessibility around boxing, BoxUnion offers an ongoing skill-based class entitled Box U. Designed specifically for new boxers or those looking for a refresh, Box U focuses on breaking down the basics and is complemented with low impact body weight movements and cardio.
