Renowned American Journalist Opens Up About The Difficulties She And Her Husband Have Faced In Trying For A Baby
NEW YORK, Aug. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In media and Hollywood, pregnancy is glorified to epic proportions, but the road to baby has traditionally been a closed one. That's especially true for renowned American journalist Debra Kamin.
In her heartbreaking personal essay for Glammonitor.com, she opens up about the issues she and her husband have faced in trying for a baby, including suffering a miscarriage and undergoing IVF treatment.
"After I first miscarried, I found the only thing that helped was talking about it out loud, and yet women who have trouble conceiving are taught to keep their struggles hidden and not share them. I really hope that other women who have struggled like I have will read my story and realize they are far from alone, and they have nothing to be ashamed of," said Kamin.
"Infertility patients are stigmatized by not adhering to cultural norms and timelines. Media messaging tells us that it's time to fall in love, get married, have babies. When we deviate from that plan or worse, on societal and culturally dictated timelines, we invite ourselves to questions. 'What's taking so long?' 'When are you going to make us grandparents?' By having to go on the defensive, we face the stigma of not going along with the societal status quo of marriage and family building."
"I admire Debra's courage in exposing her deeply personal story on a public level," said Matan Uziel, General Manager of Glammonitor.com. "Infertility has become taboo, it is rarely discussed. For the women and their husbands who continue to struggle in trying to get pregnant, I hope Debra's story will extend a message of hope and give a window of opportunity for other people to inform the public of their plight. Sometimes the best advocacy is simple exposure, and Glammonitor.com was founded exactly for this purpose."
