Scaling Your Mobile Enterprise

Executive Summary
Worker mobility is evolving beyond a nice-to-have, becoming a must-have for an increasing number of employees. According to Yankee Group's Anywhere Enterprise Large: 2008 U.S. Mobile Blended Lifestyle Survey, nearly three-quarters of workers believe allowing employees to work in a remote or mobile environment benefits the company. In that same survey, Yankee Group asked employees to name the single most important thing their company could do for them to improve their productivity, and the leading response was the ability to work in a remote or mobile setting. Employees are demanding the flexibility to work from anywhere.
However, IT managers are simply reacting to the wave of mobile technology flooding their organizations rather than charting a cohesive mobile road map. They find it difficult to strike the appropriate balance between lockdown and laissez faire. The consequence of IT's ad hoc approach to mobility is that consumers are defining their own mobile environment by introducing consumer technology into the workplace. In this report, we define the three key elements to developing a holistic mobile architecture that will enable IT to regain control of the mobile environment: device management, application access and security, and connectivity management. There is no single vendor that can deliver on all aspects of the three key elements without partnering, so enterprises must seek a multivendor approach (see Exhibit 1).
