Subscription MMOGs - Mixed Fortunes in High Risk Game
http://www.reportlinker.com/p0306636/Subscription-MMOGs---Mixed-Fortunes-in-High-Risk-Game.html
Screen Digest's latest subscription MMOG report covering detailed market data and forecasts to 2014 for North America, Europe and a number of individual territories within those regions. The latest report includes 2009 actuals and also highlights the mixed fortunes of operators within this high risk sector.
We maintain our view that subscriptions will continue to play an important role in the MMOG sector. Certain consumer groups and types of service are well suited to subscriptions but we also acknowledge the growing success and adoption of microtransaction-based MMOGs as an alternative business model for operators.
Activision Blizzard remains the biggest operator in subscription MMOGs, with a 54% share of consumer revenues (money spent on subscriptions less VAT). The company's share of the market has dropped from its peak in 2008, due to its growth slowing and due to an influx of premium subscription services, some of which have found good traction in the market. At an operator level, the subscription MMOG market is very fragmented, with a large number of services unable to break the 200k subscription level to compete at the entrenched top-end of the market.
Highlights:
* The subscription MMOG market in North America and Europe grew to be worth $1.6bn in 2009, up from $1.4bn in 2008
* Screen Digest predicts a Western CAGR for subscription consumer revenues of 4.9%, taking 2014 subscription revenues to almost $2bn
* Western subscriptions expanded to 13m by the end of the year
* 56% of subscriptions were in North America
* Blended average monthly subscription ARPU dropped by almost 10% in 2009 due to popularity of cheaper premium subscription services
* Activision Blizzard remains the dominant operator with 54% share of the market in 2009, down from 60% in 2008
