World demand to rise 5% annually through 2014
World demand for cups and lids is projected to rise 5.0 percent per year to $23.4 billion in 2014. Factors contributing to rising demand will include growth in foodservice revenues and trends toward convenience-oriented food options as a result of fast-paced lifestyles and increasing personal income levels. Gains will be fueled by advances in the quick service restaurant industry, which will remain the main user of disposable cups and lids. Products made from biodegradable or recyclable materials will post robust advances. This is due to increased pressure on foodservice establishments and packaging producers to reduce their environmental footprint, especially in developed countries with more established environmental regulations.
Good opportunities in foodservice and packaging
The largest share of cups and lids will be used in the foodservice market, mainly in limited foodservice establishments such as fast food restaurants, coffee houses and ice cream shops. In developed areas such as the US and Western Europe, the increasing use of costlier insulated paper cups (e.g., double- and triple-wall types) will boost value gains, as will the development of cups utilizing biodegradable coatings rather than conventional polyethylene linings. Furthermore, rising environmental concerns regarding the use of disposable cups will foster demand for higher-priced foodservice cups made from biodegradable plastics such as polylactic acid. Cup and lid demand in the food and beverage packaging market will see some of the fastest gains, supported by the development of newer uses where cups provide convenience, portability and portion control; the rising popularity of single-serving microwaveable cups; and continued healthy growth in items such as yogurt, dry coffee, fruits and jelly, which are often packaged in plastic portion cups.
US to remain leading consumer by a wide margin
The US will remain the largest consumer of cups and lids in the world by a wide margin, representing 35 percent of the global cup and lid market in 2014. This leading position stems from the US' large foodservice, and food and beverage packaging industries; greater use of more expensive cups and lids; trends favoring single-serving food cups; and the continued popularity of fast food outlets and coffee shops. These factors will continue to drive demand for cups and lids in the US in the coming years. Even though faster growth is expected in developing countries, the US alone will still account for close to one-third of market value gains through 2014. Demand for cups and lids in Asia, Central and South America, Eastern Europe and the Africa/Mideast region will rise faster than the global average, boosted by rising living standards and the rapidly growing number of limited service restaurants serving on-the-go food and beverages packaged in cups and lids. Furthermore, industrialization trends will fuel demand for cups and lids in these regions' typically underdeveloped food and beverage processing industries. Some of the best growth rates are expected in China, India and Indonesia, with Brazil and Russia also poised to post healthy gains. Advances in North America and Western Europe will be below average, with market value supported by greater use of biodegradable and compostable products. While Japan's cup and lid market will see some of the slowest growth globally, the country will remain the second largest market.
