Oil prices, shale gas development to drive gains
Global demand for well stimulation materials is expected to register double-digit annual growth through 2015, boosted by persistently high oil prices, efforts to maximize the productivity of wells both old and new, and a shift in focus in many areas to shale formations and other unconventional production environments in which well stimulation techniques are particularly essential.
Four countries continue to dominate global market
Although well stimulation techniques can be used to optimize well productivity in nearly any setting, four countries -- the US, China, Russia and Canada -- account for the overwhelming majority of demand. The US is by far the largest market, due to the large number of wells in place trying to deliver hydrocarbons from some of the world's most mature fields. Canada is expected to rebound after a recent downturn in oilfield activity. China will seek to increase its supply of oil and gas from both domestic and offshore sites as its energy requirements continue to grow substantially. Russia will continue to boost production from an older oil and gas infrastructure. Elsewhere -- even in some of the world's leading oil and gas producing nations -- the use of hydraulic fracturing and other stimulation techniques is more limited. However, this is changing in several areas. In Europe, producers are hoping to sustain output levels in declining North Sea fields. Additionally, the promise of European shale gas production is considerable, though the process of developing these potentially rich sources of natural gas is in its early stages. In Latin America, well stimulation has previously found use in continental gas fields, but is expected to benefit greatly from shale gas development in a number of countries and continued growth of oil production off the coast of Brazil.
Proppants of all types to remain largest segment
Proppants are expected to remain the largest product category among well stimulation materials. Inexpensive sand will continue to be replaced with more expensive engineered proppants -- such as ceramic and coated sand -- to meet the strength requirements for deeper wells with higher pressures. Ceramic proppants already occupy dominant market positions in Russia and China. However, sand will continue to lead the market in volume terms due to its low cost and good performance in less stressful environments, such as in shallow gas wells. This is especially true in the US and Canadian markets, where strong demand and regional shortages continue to drive capacity expansions by existing suppliers and attract new entrants into the industry.
Base fluid materials, additives to benefit from changes in product mix
While environmental concerns are prompting end users to reduce chemical use during fracturing operations, greater performance requirements and changes in product mix will continue to drive gains for base fluid materials and fluid additives. Overall, though, fluid materials and additives are expected to register below average growth due to efforts to reduce chemical volumes in fracturing and other stimulation processes.
Study coverage
Details on these and other key findings are contained in World Well Stimulation Materials. The study provides historical demand data (2000, 2005, 2010) and forecasts for 2015 and 2020 by product type for the four largest markets (United States, Russia, Canada, China) and other regions (Latin America, Europe, Asia/Pacific and Africa/Mideast). The study also assesses market environment factors, examines company market share and includes profiles of industry competitors worldwide.
