DUBLIN, March 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
A recent report published on Research and Markets forecasts the video-on-demand market in the United States to grow at a CAGR of 25.50% over the period 2015-2019. According to the report, more than 70% of adults watch online videos on a weekly basis. The report states that people have started watching videos on their mobile devices rather than just on their desktops, which has increased the consumption of VOD services. This has been further evidenced by AT&T's announcement that it will roll out three new ways to stream DIRECTV content on wireless and wired devices.
The three new offerings are:
- DIRECTV Now - offering all content in its current packages.
- DIRECTV Mobile - premium content for smartphone users only.
- DIRECTV Preview - content from "AT&T's AUDIENCE Network."
AT&T purchased DIRECTV for $48.5 billion last year, and became the world's largest pay-TV operator with 45 million video subscribers. But the online video market is competitive, with established players like Netflix. According to a report on the global digital video content market, TV service providers are increasingly offering converged services that include the feature of the Internet. It says the increase in the number of smartphones and tablets has led to a considerable rise in the consumption of digital content and is predicting growth at a CAGR of 15.43% by 2019.
A report on the global video streaming and broadcasting equipment market has similar expectations. It says that with the availability of high-speed Internet, consumers are increasingly using smartphones to stream online videos. That market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 13.99% over the period 2015-2019.
AT&T said prices will be announced at a later date but confirmed that DIRECTV will continue offering its satellite TV package.
