The survey findings show a significant relative increase of 38% from 2015 to 2016 of tax departments that are planning to increase headcount. Of those tax leaders that participated in the survey, 83% attribute their hiring to having new positions within the tax department.
"This three-year trend clearly shows this as a candidate-driven market where the supply will once again not meet the demand for corporate in-house tax departments," says Tony Santiago, President & Founder of TaxSearch and TaxTalent. "The survey findings further reveal specific areas in tax that will be in most demand. These are critical data points for both candidates and corporate in-house tax employers to consider," says Santiago.
The 2016 Tax Hiring Outlook indicates major themes besides what positions are in most demand that will impact tax hiring difficulty in 2016. With 93% of respondents expecting hiring to be 'moderate' to 'extremely difficult', tax hiring authorities could benefit from reviewing the recommendations included in the Tax Hiring Outlook.
Since these factors are a clear indication of a candidate-driven market, the low supply of tax professionals means compensation structure and career development become top priorities to effectively hire and retain top talent. Santiago believes that mentoring is such a critical success factor for recruitment and retention, that he has created a free just-in-time mentor program to benefit the tax community.

"Analysis of the 2016 Tax Hiring Outlook only shows one piece of the hiring puzzle," says Santiago. "The 2016 Career Satisfaction Survey, which will be released in May, will give us a good sense of what tax professionals at a manager and below level are looking for in a tax employer. Once you layer that data on top of the 2016 Tax Hiring Outlook, it will give us the complete tax function hiring picture for 2016."
