Jimmy Butler and Joaquín Sánchez Lead World-Class Padel Lineup as Team Reserve Secures the First-Ever Reserve Cup Marbella Title
MARBELLA, Spain, Sept. 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Reserve Cup made its highly anticipated international debut in Marbella, transforming the legendary Puente Romano Hotel into a world-class padel stage for three unforgettable days of elite competition, luxury hospitality, and cultural prestige. Led by Reserve Padel Founder, Wayne Boich, and Honorary Chairman, Jimmy Butler, the event marked the first-ever global stop of the Reserve Cup Series and delivered a dynamic blend of sport, entertainment, and star power.
Following its Miami debut in 2024 and return earlier this year, Marbella marked the Series' first international expansion and its second stop of 2025. Against the backdrop of the Costa del Sol—the birthplace of padel—Puente Romano's courts became a battlefield where every point mattered. Captains Jimmy Butler (Team Reserve) and Spanish former soccer player, Joaquín Sánchez, (Team Marbella) commanded their teams, supported by coaches Juan Martín Díaz and Maxi Grabiel, in a high-stakes showdown with $500,000 USD in prize money on the line.
The format kept tensions high, with each match victory worth three points. By the final day, Team Marbella needed a clean sweep to clinch the title, setting the stage for a series of unforgettable showdowns. Among them was the highly anticipated clash of regular partners turned rivals, Mike Yanguas & Agustín Tapia vs. Coki Nieto & Arturo Coello—a matchup many hailed as the tournament's defining battle.
Tennis legend Carlos Moyá officiated the coin toss, igniting the crowd and reinforcing his belief in padel's global rise. Throughout the day, DJ Nicky Romero kept energy levels high, transforming timeouts into mini-concerts and fueling the electric atmosphere. On the court, intensity never wavered. After a gripping battle, it was Coello & Nieto who ultimately prevailed—securing the decisive victory for Team Reserve.
Former soccer star Fernando Llorente was among those who didn't want to miss the action on the final day, taking in the matches from the stands as a true padel fan. The crowd was filled with notable names, including Andriy Shevchenko (Ukrainian football legend and former manager), Lara Álvarez (Spanish journalist and TV host), Carolina Cerezuela (Spanish TV presenter and actress), Marta Hazas (actress), María de Nati (actress), Stefania Roitman (actress), Rafael de Medina (Duke of Feria), Javier Veiga (director and actor), Carlos Suárez (Venezuelan soccer player), and Julen Lobete (Spanish soccer player).
Throughout the weekend, over 10,000 guests attended and enjoyed an elevated hospitality experience reflective of Reserve Cup's lifestyle-driven ethos. Puente Romano Hotel offered a showcase of Mediterranean luxury, from curated dining and VIP lounges to exclusive brand activations. Official partners, including Moncayo Ocean Club, Playtomic, Red Bull, Sierra Blanca Estates, Discovery Land Company, Wilson, Medik Hair, Puente Romano Hotel, and the City of Marbella, helped deliver a multi-sensory experience that matched the level of play.
Wayne Boich expressed: "Bringing the Reserve Cup to Marbella was a dream realized—not only because it marks our first international stop, but because we were able to showcase the sport in its birthplace, surrounded by incredible fans, partners, and players. Puente Romano and the City of Marbella provided the perfect stage for three days of world-class padel and unforgettable experiences."
The Mayor of Marbella, María Ángeles Muñoz, added: "We are really enjoying the atmosphere, the quality of the players, and the fact that it is being held in Marbella. It has been an honor for us to have it here in the top spot in Europe. We will do everything possible to repeat it, as Marbella is the birthplace of padel. Marbella is one of the favorite tourist destinations for Americans, and for us, American tourists are among the best you can find."
Beyond the team victory, individual accolades highlighted the weekend:
- Coki Nieto of Madrid was crowned overall Reserve Cup Series winner, earning $66,000 USD.
- Arturo Coello came in second place, Ale Galán in third, and Maxi Sánchez in fourth.
- Jimmy Butler's Team Reserve received the championship prize of $180,000 USD, closing out a weekend that redefined padel's global stage.
The first European edition of the Reserve Cup thus closes with a clear message: Marbella has written a new page in the history of international padel, where sport, entertainment, and passion have come together to create a unique tournament.
Red Bull TV, the official broadcast partner, livestreamed every match free to audiences worldwide, amplifying Marbella's message across the globe.
