Retail market growth varies across the regions of Russia.
Report evaluates sales in key segments for each federal district, provides forecasts
The Russian retail market has experienced considerable growth in recent years, at times in excess of 15%. Due to the size of the country and variations in population, disposable income and retail saturation, retail development in various segments has been difficult to track, presenting difficulties for companies trying to evaluate the potential for growth on a regional basis.
In an effort to meet the information needs of retailers active in the Russian market, PMR has prepared Retail in Russia 2013 – regional focus. Market analysis and development forecasts for 2013-2015, a comprehensive study of the enormous Russian market broken down by segment – grocery, clothing, footwear and accessories, consumer electronics, DIY, and cosmetics and toiletries – as well as federal district – Central, Far Eastern, North Caucasian, Northwestern, Siberian, Southern, Urals and Volga.
This publication aims to provide data and analysis of the massive Russian retail market while highlighting the variations in population, income and degree of development of the retail networks in each federal district. It was compiled to provide retail professionals with a single source of sales data, growth projections and economic information that can be used to track retail market value and development and proceed with planning and expansion activities on a regional basis.
The report presents detailed profiles of major chains operating across Russia on global, national and regional levels, along with chain activity such as mergers and acquisitions for the last two years. It offers total sales for each major retail segment extending back to 2009 and forecasting forward to 2015, with a regional orientation that is especially valuable to readers attempting to track and monitor the recent evolution and future prospects of this large market and locate the areas where opportunity and market potential match their particular type of retail business.
Readers will discover which federal districts contain the most highly saturated retail networks, as well as those supporting the highest level of sales. They will learn about the most prolific global and nationwide retailers operating in the various federal districts of Russia, and which districts contain the greatest opportunities for expansion. They will learn about recent retail growth in each major segment, in all areas of the country, and the development of regional retail chains in each of the federal districts.
All data, analysis and forecasts are presented in a format that allows users to compare recent and future growth in the grocery, CFA, consumer electronics, DIY, and cosmetics and toiletries segments in each federal district, and conduct their business operations accordingly.

Extract from this report
• The Central Federal District remains the most urbanised district in Russia with 310 cities, a high urbanisation level (81.7%) and 59.3 inhabitants per km2, which is seven times the Russian average. There is a large gap between the most densely populated districts – Central, North Caucasian, Volga, and Southern – and districts with the lowest density, including the Far Eastern Federal District, where there is only one person per km2.
• The Volga Federal District saw several M&A deals in 2011 and 2012 with local retail chains being the targets of the deals. It must be noted that the most active buyer was the leader of retailing in Russia, the X5 Retail Group, which used the acquisitions as a tool for penetration and expansion into this district.
• The Northwestern Federal District is prominent for giving birth to such well-known retail chains as Pyaterochka, O'Key, Lenta, Karusel, as well as the Maxidom DIY chain. All these chains originate in St. Petersburg.
