Rolf-Detlef Treede Elected IASP President
WASHINGTON, Nov. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Members of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) have elected Rolf-Detlef Treede, Prof., Dr. med, as the organization's new president. Treede is chair of neurophysiology and managing director of the Center for Biomedicine and Medical Technology Mannheim at Heidelberg University in Germany.
Treede assumed presidency in October at IASP's 15th World Congress on Pain and will remain president until October 2016. He succeeds Fernando Cervero, MD, PhD, DSc, director of the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain and professor of anesthesiology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
Treede has been a member of IASP for more than 30 years, and he is committed to expanding IASP's scope to reach out to neighboring disciplines such as rheumatology, pediatrics, oncology, and neurology. He notes that "IASP can serve as an information broker to help bring pain medicine to the people that need it."
Treede's research addresses peripheral transduction, cortical processing, pain memory and neuropathic pain. His laboratory has contributed to the development of clinical laboratory tests such as Quantitative Sensory Testing. Formerly chair of NeuPSIG, the IASP Special Interest Group on Neuropathic Pain, Treede was involved in international guidelines on assessment and treatment of neuropathic pain. As former president of the German Pain Society (DGSS), he contributed to mandatory teaching of pain medicine in medical schools. He also contributed to the introduction of a chronic pain code into the German International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10). The ICD is the foundation for the identification of health trends and statistics globally. It allows the world to compare and share health information using a common language.
