SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
WHAT: |
On Monday, June 22 at 11 a.m., the Ronald Reagan Centennial Capitol Foundation will unveil a memorial Statue of President Ronald Reagan in California's State Capitol. |
"This is a significant occasion, as President Reagan remains the only governor of California to become President of the United States," said Douglas Elmets, Chairman of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Capitol Foundation. "President Reagan was a transformative figure in our nation's history and we are pleased to have the opportunity to honor him in the State Capitol where he once served as governor." |
Secretary George Shultz, 60th United States Secretary of State, will represent the Reagan Family at the unveiling. There will also be dozens of dignitaries, California State Legislators and former Reagan staffers in attendance. |
"We worked hard during our years in Sacramento, but it was also our home, and we truly enjoyed it," said Nancy Reagan. "I am thrilled that my husband's statue will stand in such a prominent place, welcoming all who visit the State Capitol." |
Assembly Bill 2358 passed through the California State Legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support and was signed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2012. The bill effectively authorized the construction of a memorial statue honoring President Reagan in the California State Capitol. |
Over the last three years, world-renowned sculptor Douglas Van Howd has been working closely with the Reagan Family and the Ronald Reagan Centennial Capitol Foundation to ensure that the memorial statue is a seamless replication of President Reagan's character. |
At no cost to taxpayers, this statue has been funded entirely through private donations made to the Ronald Reagan Centennial Capitol Foundation. |
