Description:  The energy and resource use of our buildings is a large part of our environmental impact, but this is something that can be changed significantly by our design and construction industry using well-known techniques and existing technologies.  In this presentation, you will learn about the impact of buildings on our energy and resource use.  You will also learn about low-technology, high-impact techniques that we can use to create buildings that are more comfortable, durable and energy efficient than most buildings built today.  The focus will be on building enclosures with discussion about interactions with other building systems.

Part 2: Heat Control Fundamentals

Description:  "Effective" thermal performance is replacing simple R-values in modern, high performance commercial buildings.  For most buildings, continuous exterior insulation will be the new normal.  This presentation will help you understand thermal control fundamentals, changing codes and standards, and how to detail enclosures with continuous exterior insulation.  You will come away with solutions to problematic thermal bridges and an understanding of how higher levels of thermal control affect enclosure design.

Description:  Air barrier systems are becoming a more important concern for modern, high performance commercial buildings.  This presentation will help you understand changing codes and standards, why air tightness is important for commercial buildings, and how to detail air barrier systems.  Because air tightness is a "whole building" characteristic that depends on the work of multiple trades, we will also look at commissioning and inspection during construction.  You will come away with a stronger understanding of how air barrier systems work and how to solve common problems in design and construction.

Part 4: Moisture Control Fundamentals

Description:  As we increase the thermal resistance and air tightness of our building enclosures to improve comfort and energy performance, we also put our enclosure assemblies at greater risk of moisture-related problems.  This presentation will help you understand how we have changed the moisture performance of modern assemblies and what the unintended consequences might be.  You will come away with an understanding of the basic moisture physics involved and how to make decisions about moisture control that will increase durability and reduce moisture-related problems.
