FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Ruby + Associates, a constructability-focused structural engineering firm, announced today that it has completed work on the ThyssenKrupp Steel facility in Calvert, Alabama.  Working with CH2M Hill, Ruby's involvement on the ThyssenKrupp project included structural design for three buildings (two Hot Dip Galvanizing storage buildings and a Hot Strip Mill) and a Slab Yard Crane Runway Structure.

A primary challenge on the ThyssenKrupp project was a fast-track timeline that required a streamlined schedule.  Ruby applied its constructability expertise to create a comprehensive, cohesive plan to design the crane girders, columns and trusses for the three buildings (approximately 1.5 million square feet) in just four months.  Ruby was also able to accommodate multiple process design changes requested during the condensed process.

For Ruby, a company well-known for efficient use of steel, it was apropos to design a structure that will aide in the manufacturing and storage of steel.  "Working with steel is what we love to do," said Jay Ruby, President and CEO of Ruby + Associates.  "Our understanding of structural steel construction propels our ability to provide great work for our clients.  Our constructability approach enabled us to achieve a shortened schedule while at the same time lowering construction costs for our project partner CH2M Hill and for our customers at ThyssenKrupp."

Ruby has had previous experience working with CH2M Hill and ThyssenKrupp.  "We love working with new clients," said Ruby.  "However, it's especially gratifying to earn repeat business.  On this project, there were several similar buildings required.  Because of our involvement we were able to help the buildings we worked on be constructible and therefore lower cost than other buildings at the facility.  As our constructability approach is continually validated with real-world successes, we hope to attract new customers and continue to re-earn loyal ones."

Ruby continues to increase its geographic footprint.  The company has now been involved in at least a half dozen projects in Alabama and is currently at work in 12 other states, Canada, Mexico and the Dominican Republic on projects ranging from Consulting for a new stadium in Florida, to Connection Design for a new high-rise in New York, to Heavy Lift Engineering in Canada, to an Erection Procedure for a new arena in Indiana, to Structural Design for a new battery plant in Michigan.

CH2M Hill of Englewood, Colorado, is a global leader in full-service engineering, consulting, construction, and operations.
