Rumba Room Owner Vows to Fight Unlawful Detainer Action Filed by Universal City Walk
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Jan. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The owner of the venerable Rumba Room, a popular Latina-owned entertainment venue at Universal CityWalk, today vowed to fight a concerted effort on the part of Universal CityWalk owners to force the Rumba Room to close its doors, following receipt of an unlawful detainer action filed by CityWalk.
"Per its contract with CityWalk, Rumba Room has attempted to extend its lease for an additional five years," said Rumba Room owner Delia Hauser. "For the past year, CityWalk's legal team has stonewalled Rumba Room's efforts to extend. Now, CityWalk files an action in court that is nothing short of misleading and clearly a part of its campaign to shutter a successful and very popular small business."
According to the unlawful detainer filed last Friday, CityWalk claims the Rumba Room's lease expired on December 31st, completely ignoring Rumba Room's attempts to extend its contract by an additional five years. Over the past year, Rumba Room representatives tried on numerous occasions to work with CityWalk to extend its lease, only to be rebuffed. Instead, CityWalk began a campaign to discredit the Rumba Room and allegedly instructed security guards to harass Rumba Room staff and patrons, ostensibly to depress attendance and intimidate owners and staff.
"In its ten year history the Rumba Room has never missed a rent payment," added Ms. Hauser. "Even during these difficult economic times, the Rumba Room has always met its financial obligations to CityWalk and historically has been a major economic driver at CityWalk, generating millions of dollars in concerts and events, food and beverage, parking and other consumer-driven dollars.
"Two years ago, BB King's Blues Club, one of the few African American venues on the Walk went out of business and CityWalk is attempting to eliminate the Rumba Room, the only Latina-owned business on the Walk. These questionable practices have to end. If it takes a counter suit to fight for our ability to extend our lease then so be it. We intend to fight this every step of the way," concluded Hauser.
