SAIC to Provide Additional Easy-to-Deploy Tsunami Buoy Systems to Australia

Next Generation Tsunami Buoy System Successfully Deployed in the Coral Sea

MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) today announced it has been awarded a contract for the production and delivery of two additional next generation Easy-to-Deploy (ETD) Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART®) buoy systems by the Bureau of Meteorology, Melbourne Australia.  

Production of the two additional systems for Australia comes after the first successful deployment of an SAIC ETD DART® in 4,500 meters of seawater in the Coral Sea on August 27, 2010.  The systems will become an important component of the Australian tsunami detection network which currently includes seven buoy systems operating in the Indian Ocean, Fiji Basin, Coral and Tasman Seas.

During the last five years, NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) developed the next-generation ETD DART® tsunami buoy system.  This year SAIC produced the first commercial prototype of the system through a license agreement with NOAA-PMEL.  The ETD DART® brings a new complementary capability to the proven SAIC Tsunami Buoy (STB) product line. Its mooring is designed to be deployed by a vessel as small as a commercial fishing boat, requires fewer trained personnel, and can be deployed in only a few minutes.  In the right oceanographic conditions, the ETD DART® can be deployed in lieu of an STB.

The new system consists of a modular surface buoy subsystem, a single pressure vessel integrated bottom pressure recorder (BPR) subsystem, and a self-deploying mooring and anchor subsystem.  As a result of engineering improvements and incorporation of improved technology, reductions in the overall size and weight of the ETD DART® have been accomplished while maintaining DART® performance standards.

The two systems will be delivered to the Bureau of Meteorology in December 2010 with one scheduled for deployment in the Indian Ocean, south of Bali, after the beginning of the new year.
