Salt Lake City Mission, Provider of Housing Outreach to the Homeless, Is About to Be Homeless Itself Again
SALT LAKE CITY, June 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Salt Lake City Mission has issued the following urgent statement: "The Lord has presented us with a very unique opportunity. The owner of our Men's Recovery Home, where we have housed our men's program since 1997, in West Valley City, Utah, has been foreclosed on. The building was sold on the steps of the courthouse on January 4th, 2011 and reverted back to the bank. We have tried unsuccessfully to give our rent payments to the bank, and even purchase the property from the bank. We have good credit and strong financials. However, the bank does not make commercial loans in Utah!
"We have received a letter from the bank requesting us to move by June 2011.
"In addition, on Monday, May 16th, 2011, the building that houses the Mission's Recovery Program classrooms and meeting and counseling rooms, along with our corporate offices, was sold and we have to move right away!"
Each month, Salt Lake City Mission provides the needy with thousands of:
- articles of clothing,
- hygiene kits,
- blankets, etc.
It also provides co-pays for:
- prescription medication,
- dental emergencies,
- eye glasses,
- hearing aids, etc.
But the crown jewel of its ministry is providing the homeless with a practical way out, by facilitating recovery through:
- life skills classes,
- mentoring,
- Bible studies,
- group sessions,
- GED prep,
- vocational assistance,
- schooling,
- work therapy.
Salt Lake City Mission feeds the hungry every day. It serves over 8,000 meals a month and distributes pantry-style food boxes to desperate local families.
But the most effective results come from the thousands of hours of personal counseling. Many of these results take place at the Men's Recovery Home, in the program, class and counseling rooms.
"These men really need your help now. I can sincerely tell you every gift you give translates into helping someone in his moment of most critical need. If members of the public could consider a special gift at this time it would be part of the miracle that we are expecting to transition to a new facility. I believe that God will turn this around for good. But we need the community to stand with us right now! We need prayers and special financial support," says Brad Jaques of Salt Lake City Mission.
Salt Lake City Mission has its eye on a replacement facility that might be the answer not just for these men but for many, many more.
The Mission is seeking 600 individuals to give $1,000, or 1,200 to give $500, or 2,400 to give just $250.
"However," continues Jaques, "a gift of any amount will greatly be appreciated and beneficial. Oftentimes the small gifts add up over time to equal some of the much larger ones.
"But right now we have to do something quickly."
