The award was announced at the European Poker Awards' 11th annual awards ceremony recognizing the best Europeans poker pros and newcomers, as well as the people involved in running the poker industry. Sam Trickett was chosen poker player of the year for 2011 after his selection by a jury composed of some of the top names in European poker and an online vote by avid poker fans.
